Procreate For Rendering COURSE

See your ideas — and help others see
them too.

This is where design becomes story. You’ll take proportionally accurate 3D views from SketchUp and transform them into hand-rendered scenes that carry mood, atmosphere, and life. No rigid, over-detailed computer images. Instead, you’ll learn how to sketch, layer, shade, and color in ways that keep options open, invite collaboration, and draw clients into your vision.

You don’t need to be a “great illustrator” to make compelling renderings. You need a system — one that uses ambiguity, charm, and story-driven composition to create drawings that feel alive. This course shows you how to do that with speed, precision where it matters, and the flexibility of digital tools.

Wouldn't it be great if you could…

  • Turn SketchUp views into expressive hand-rendered visuals — in hours, not days
  • Add warmth, depth, and atmosphere while keeping proportions accurate
  • Confidently render daylight, twilight, and interior glow effects
  • Layer color, shadow, and texture to tell a compelling design story
  • Present drawings that stand apart from flat, computer-perfect images
  • Build trust and win approval faster with visuals that invite collaboration

What’s Holding You Back?

If you’ve struggled to render in Procreate or to find a style that works for architecture, you’re not alone.
We often hear:

You can model in SketchUp, but your exports feel flat and lifeless

Other rendering apps push you toward slow, photoreal outputs that kill early design flexibility

You want drawings that feel handmade while still fitting into professional workflows

You’ve seen isolated tutorials, but never a complete, start-to-finish rendering system

About Me

I’m James Akers — a registered architect, professional renderer, and founding instructor behind iPad for Architects. My early career was built on pencil and watercolor, where I learned the value of atmosphere, layering, and the idiosyncrasy of the hand-drawn line.

Today I bring those same principles into digital practice. Through draw-to-scale systems, hybrid workflows, and story-driven rendering methods, I help architects and designers rediscover the expressive power of hand drawing — with the speed and flexibility of modern tools.

...I started using the rendering tactics in your Rendering with Procreate course which are massively time-saving and optimize my work. Long story short, I’m now doing these quick, 2-to 5-hour color renderings—similar to what I learned in your course—for upcoming broadcast commercials and shows. My new clients love my Procreate hand renderings! So you were actually not BS-ing when you said this stuff could change your life. Just wanted to thank you again. I’m starting on the Sketchup for iPad course now, and please let me know if you ever do one for Shapr-3D. With gratitude and appreciation for all you do

Why I Created the Procreate for Rendering Course

Most rendering courses chase photorealism or offer scattered Procreate tricks. The problem is, photoreal images often shut down the design conversation too early — they look “finished” before ideas have had a chance to breathe.

This course takes the opposite approach. It’s a focused, step-by-step system that shows architects and designers how to transform SketchUp exports into renderings that carry mood, atmosphere, and life. You’ll learn how to layer line, color, shade, and shadow in ways that keep ideas open, invite client collaboration, and still look polished in a professional presentation.

By the end, you won’t just have renderings you’re proud to share — you’ll have a repeatable method for creating drawings that tell a story, win trust, and keep the design process alive.

What This Course Will Help You Become…

  • A designer who can render quickly, by hand, without outsourcing or endless post-production
  • Someone who adds warmth, atmosphere, and personality to SketchUp views
  • A communicator who conveys emotion and story — not just geometry
  • A professional who can create polished, client-ready renderings in a few focused hours
  • A creator who feels confident with color, layering, and light
  • A hybrid thinker who moves fluidly between technical structure and artistic expression
  • A presenter whose drawings stand out in a sea of generic software outputs
  • A renderer who shifts between daylight, twilight, and interior glow with intention
  • A storyteller who knows how to guide the viewer’s eye
  • A designer who feels proud of both the images they produce — and the creative process behind them

How is this course different? Most rendering tutorials teach isolated tricks or chase photoreal effects that shut down design conversation. Procreate for Rendering gives you a complete, story-driven workflow — taking SketchUp scenes to hand renderings that feel alive, collaborative, and presentation-ready in just a few hours.

I’m a very recent ex-Disney Imagineer (Senior concept designer/ Art Director) and I want to grow my skills doing exactly what you're doing for vacation resorts and such. Love your videos because I’m using and learning the same tools. Thank you for these tutorials!!!

What’s Inside the
Procreate for Rendering Course?

This course gives you a complete, story-driven rendering system — everything you need to turn SketchUp exports into hand renderings full of life and atmosphere. You’ll learn how to:

  • Choose and compose your view — rotate SketchUp models to find the angle that tells the strongest story.
  • Sketch the scene loosely — explore composition, proportion, and storytelling before committing to final lines.
  • Build flexible linework — draft clean outlines on layered drawings so changes are easy at any stage.
  • Add depth with color — use watercolor-inspired layering to build volume, light, and variation while keeping colors adjustable.
  • Shape atmosphere with shadows — apply Select & Fill techniques and Multiply layers to sculpt light and shade naturally.
  • Create immersive effects — develop twilight glows, interior light, and distant landscape context that pull viewers into the design.
  • Enrich with texture — use subtle brushes to avoid flatness and give drawings tactile character.

By the end, you’ll have a complete, repeatable workflow for producing renderings that communicate mood, story, and professional clarity — without ever looking like generic software output.

I rejected the iPad as just another gizmo... then I succumbed, bought an old one, and within 24 hours, I was smitten. I traded it for a powerful one two weeks later. James' courses have been magic—I never considered the iPad as a time saver, but now I can’t imagine my workflow without it. The first paying sketch took 1.5 hours, but the revision took 7 minutes... the client responded in 5 minutes and was excited.

I’ve been using computers forever, yet I feel stupid as $#!t sometimes. But somehow, these classes made it click. I got my money’s worth on the first lesson alone—how to navigate the gallery. I needed to take that before jumping into rendering. It’s hard being an old dog... but this old dog is learning new tricks.

Who This Is For

This course is perfect if you are:

  • A working architect, interior designer, educator, or student who needs to present ideas with clarity and atmosphere
  • Someone who wants renderings that feel handmade but still integrate seamlessly into professional workflows
  • Ready to replace outsourcing with a fast, repeatable system you can rely on in-house
  • Looking for a structured, start-to-finish process instead of scattered tutorials

Who This Is NOT For

This program is probably not right if you:

  • Want a shortcut without investing in real practice
  • See rendering as “coloring in” rather than a design communication tool
  • Expect to master every rendering style overnight

OMG! You are amazing wow! I’ve learned more about procreate from your video than in a year. Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial. You made everything look so easy and your paste was incredible for actually keeping up. Watched the entire video with my mouth wide open. Thank you!
